The purpose of historical inquiry is not sim* to present facts but to search for an interpretation of the past. The reason I want to study History is sim* that it combines the excitement of exploration and discovery with the sense of reward born from successfully confronting and making sense of complex and challenging problems.
History is fascinating because society is constantly evolving and as a result, the history must evolve with it.
I seek enrolment in a program that not only maintains a superb reputation but that will also demand only the highest quality effort from each of its students. I hope that you are able to give me the privilege of continuing my studies on the level demanded by your prestigious institution. I have applied all my abilities and diligence to getting into Oxford.
My aim has always been to excel in examinations, no matter how demanding they were. I made sure I achieved straight. As in all aspects of my studies.From my strong performance in my A level history exam to my past work experience, my background and qualifications have given me the skills to succeed in your program.Although school occupies most of my time, I have learnt the rewards of contributing towards school life and have been head student for two years. I take pleasure in debating issues that are important to me, and as part of my contribution I set up a school debating society. This position has improved my leadership, organisational and communication skills and, given me the chance to combine my theoretical knowledge and my interpersonal skills to successfully debate issues closely related to history.
Outside of academics, I am a keen sportsman, competitively playing hockey and football. Last year I participated in the AA regional school athletics finals, achieving first position. My other passion is swimming, I have been a member of Warwickshire swimming club for nine years. One of my biggest achievements has been taking the County Champion title and crowned the record holder in the men’s 200m butterfly.
My swimming practices have also given me the chance to complete my life guard qualification, enabling me to gain work as a lifeguard. My swimming ability also helps with my interest in scuba diving. Last summer I volunteered to assist with teaching scuba diving at a school in Italy. This experience was extremely valuable, improving my communication skills and the appreciation of different cultures and backgrounds.
For years, I have maintained a firm devotion to history. All of my experiences, coupled with a strong academic background, will allow me to embrace studying history at Oxford University.

Due to the comprehensiveness of Chinas reform and open policies， economics plays an increasingly important role in the development of its global position. Though more and more companies built， management of companies cannot catch up with the development of the companies. Management is a burgeoning field in China， so I hope I can acquire more modern knowledge on management in England.
The roots of my strong interest in business can be traced back to my childhood. My father was among the first of Chinas new breed of modern entrepreneurs. As a young girl， it was inspirational hearing about his business ventures， and meeting the varied and interesting circle of entrepreneurs. My mother was also involved in business as an accountant， helping him with simple calculations. And so it was early in my life that I hoped I， also， would someday be able to enter the realm of business. With the time of growing up， I preferred reading books to satisfy my curiosity. I never ceased to contemplate over the questions I encountered. Subjects on business and management became a special fascination to me and my knowledge of psychology as well as interest in this field was increasing rapidly. As a high school student in China， I had to concentrate on the College Entrance Examination （CEE）， even so， books not related to the exams were never excluded from my life. Unfortunately when sitting in the exam in June， 2001， I was so nervous that I didnt score well in the CEE exam. I enrolled in the department of Com*r Science in Zhejiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Any attempt to persuade myself to focus on my major turned out to be a failure at the beginning of my college life. After several terms， I realized that I would never be interested in being a programmer or an engineer. At that moment， I lost my direction and objectives. My persistence in reading saved me from the dark situation. As a matter of fact， I enjoyed reading the books included Encyclopedia American， and some books about management by Peter F.Drucker. I began to notice something interesting： Why some companies can produce more than others？ Why some company can sell more than others？ Why some companies can build up but others cannot when facing the same difficulties？ With the questions in my mind， I started to read many relevant books. I was lucky to read the book Jack： Straight from the Gutby Jack Welch， in Which John A. Byrne makes a clear illustration that the management is important for a company. When I was a junior， I ran a bookshop by myself near my school. I should manage not only the finance in the shop but also the employees in my shop even made some strategies to enlarge the business in my shop to hold on the run the shop. From this， my interpersonal skills and the capacity in business has been greatly developed， definitely I was increasingly interested in what I was doing. By December， 2003， I had finally determined to take business management as my career instead of IT.
To accumulate more relevant knowledge， I strived to gain more practical work experience in some big companies. Fortunately， as a senior， I began by conducting an internship in the Architecture Company in Zhejiang Province. Over six months， I worked as an assistant of the manager to harmonize the relationship between the different departments in this company and to draft some management system， which broadened my perspective of management conditions and business performance in different industries. The experience showed me that management is much more important than that of I thought in big companies. After graduation， I continued my work in this company. In May， 2005， the company offered me an opportunity to participate in an training program held by a famous management school. I believe teachers are given the opportunity to set the foundations of aprosperous future, not only for individual children but for our society as awhole. Although this is a huge responsibility, I also believe that through theeducation of children, we are able to deliver children the opportunity to find afuture which they enjoy, and this is a responsibility which is very much worthworking towards. Overcoming the hardships involved in working with young peoplein such a transitional and dynamic time of their lives will be a challenge, butI believe the reward of seeing children flourish is more than worth the effortand dedication required.
I have chosen this course in particular as it is a vital step in my pathtowards teaching, and one which can equip me not only with the skills requiredto teach, but with the skills required to engage pupils in subjects which theyrequire to form the basis of their education [this will be extended once I workout if I am doing a subject joint with education/which subject]. I am extremelyinterested in the sociological aspect of this course, as it is fundamental, inmy opinion, that we understand the social issues surrounding childhood, e.g. thecreation of childhood as a concept or racism in education, if we are to moreadequately raise children in a society based in equality.
I spend most Sundays caring for my younger cousins (from infancy to the ageof 11) which has created a passion for helping the young. Likewise, I spendaround four to five hours each week voluntarily helping young people on thewebsite ‘7 Cups’, which involves helping them through issues such as bullying,stress, and family issues. I have dedicated time to reading research ofeducation, with the book ‘Racism and Education’ in particular standing out as ahugely important collection of essays.
My A2 and AS level choices have equipped me with skills which will benefitmy further education and work with young people. English Literature has been apassion of mine since year 7, and means that I have learnt key skills such as*ytical techniques and different social perspectives, as well as empathywhich is required in understanding the perspective of authors, which isessential for caring for young people. Similarly, History has given me anunderstanding of the modern education system and principles on which it isbased, for example, universality. Psychology has involved a unit specificallyfocusing on childcare attachments in young children and the effects this canhave in later life, and so I am more aware of the importance of high qualitycare and what that involves e.g. a high level of involvement in the work of eachindividual child, though of course this is difficult in the context of aclassroom of children. Finally, and possibly most importantly, Sociology hasgiven me a grasp of the social context in which we teach, i.e. the effect class,race, and gender have on children, and how teachers are responsible to educatethemselves in regards to their own inherent cultural biases, meaning that we cancombat the effects which these biases have on young people and our widersociety.

At school, I have participated in many fund raising events, open days andfurther education fairs. I regularly collect for Save the Children charity andhave subsequently become a member. Extra-curricular activities have incorporateddrama productions of Grease, the promotion of the School production of West SideStory as part of my Marketing unit and a heavy involvement in the preparationand publishing of our year 11 yearbook. These were demanding tasks, whichincluded budgeting our costs and materials to keep within a specific pricelimit. Although it was tough, I found it extremely satisfying, especially afterseeing the final results. I learned to respectthese qualities from my father, a Lebanese immigrant who worked for years tocreate his own business. Through his example, I have seen firsthand theadvantages and challenges of self-employment--the rewards to be gained and thetotal commitment required. My goal is to create a business based on my own ideasand efforts, and have made decisions aimed at bringing this dream into fruition.After graduating from college, I accepted a position as the manager of anestablished German restaurant in San Francisco. I had been the evening managerthere for nearly two years while attending college, and knew that the restaurantwas struggling. For several years, high overhead costs and poor marketing hadbrought revenue to a minimum. I saw the position as an intriguing challenge; Iknew I could dramatically increase the restaurant’ s profitability. Immediatelyafter accepting the position in July of 1995,I addressed the most significantproblem: high overhead from over staffing, food waste, and unnecessary purchasesof supplies. I lowered each of these expenses while maintaining the restaurant’s quality and efficiency. My next target was marketing. Inexpensiveadvertisement in local newspapers, attractive signage, and Internet postingsbrought in many new customers. In the meantime, I took control of theaccounting, eliminating the need for independent help. The increased revenue anddecreased spending had an immediate effect. At the end of 1996, the restaurantreported a profit for the first time in six years. I remained with the businessuntil it was sold in 1997, monitoring these changes in order to provide lastingimprovement. Although the position made me realize that the restaurant businessdid not appeal to me, those two years reaffirmed my desire to operate my ownbusiness. I had not abandoned my education during that time; while working atthe restaurant, I had taken real estate courses in the evening and passed theCalifornia State Broker exam in xx. My brother and I launched our own propertymanagement company in April of 1996,and it quickly grew. We currently have sevencommercial properties under management. Our responsibilities include leasing,accounting, and property maintenance. The firstyear curriculum of accounting, management, finance, marketing, and economicswill enhance my knowledge of the basic foundations of business and management.During my second semester, I will enroll in the track courses of EntrepreneurialStudies. These classes will teach me advanced business techniques and theirsuccessful implementation. In addition, Stern-sponsored, non-academicentrepreneurial organizations will be both educational and enjoyable. I viewthese as an opportunity to meet students who share similar goals.
