You can find (3) everything in the lists from suppliers and online store owners. Besides, you can also find (4) prices for different kinds of things online. Online shopping not only gives you (5) of goods to choose from, it also saves a lot of your time when compared to the usual way of shopping. Shopping can be done (6) a mouse, all by sitting in front of a computer in your own house. However, online shopping has its (7) dangers, too. One of them is the shipping. Since your order is shipped directly to your place, it may arrive in good condition or it may be (8) . This is an important thing to consider if you are thinking of placing a large order online. Also, it is best to check whether the goods are insured. Insurance will certainly help to protect you from paying for a (9) package. Blanks 11 to 20 are based on the same passage. There are different ideas about pets in different parts of the world. In some (11cases) people treat their pets like members of their families, or perhaps even better. In the United States and Europe, where pets are very (12)

However, in New York City, there are stores that sell gold and diamond collars, fur jackets, and hats for pets. In France, there is a (15) restaurant only for dogs. In the United States, there was a very rich cat who (16)

100,000 dollars when his owner died, and he had a beautiful house to live in. Of course, in most parts of the world, pets don"t live in such (17) and comfort. In most cultures, animals have a much lower position to human beings. This is a more practical and functional attitude toward pets. People own cats and dogs because they (18) mice and other unwanted animals. Certainly, owners generally have some loving feelings for their pets. However, they do not treat them as family members or (19) with fancy clothing. There aren"t any special restaurants for dogs. There are no rich cats that live in large and beautiful houses. 1. According to the president, what did the parents remind their children to do before they left for college? 2. What does the president call on the students to do with the greatest resources on campus? 3. What does the president mean when he says "sample them widely"" (Para. 5)? 4. What could be the consequences if you don"t challenge yourself? 5. What can you learn from the example of Vera Wang? 6. How should you deal with new and unpleasant experiences in college? 7. How do you understand "Now it is your turn" (Para. 7)? 8. How does the president"s speech impress you? 1 Good afternoon! As president of the university, I am proud to welcome you to this university. Your achievement is the triumph of years of hard work, both of your own and of your parents and teachers. Here at the university, we pledge to make your educational experience as rewarding as possible. 2 In welcoming you to the university, I am reminded of my own high school graduation and the photograph my mom took of my dad and me. "Pose naturally," Mom instructed us. "Wait!" said Dad, "Let"s take a picture of me handing him an alarm clock." The clock woke me up every morning in college. It is still on my office desk. 3 Let me share with you something that you may not expect. You will miss your old routines and your parents" reminders to work hard and attain your best. You may have cried tears of joy to be finally finished with high school, and your parents may have cried tears of joy to be finally finished with doing your laundry! But know this: The future is built on a strong foundation of the past. 4 For you, these next four years will be a time unlike any other. Here you are surrounded by great resources: interesting students from all over the country, a learned and caring faculty, a comprehensive library, great sports facilities, and student organizations covering every possible interest — from the arts to science, to community service and so on. You will have the freedom to explore and learn about new subjects. You will learn to get by on very little sleep, meet fascinating people, and pursue new passions. I want to encourage you to

make the most of this unique experience, and to use your energy and enthusiasm to reap the benefits of this opportunity. 5 You may feel overwhelmed by the wealth of courses available to you. You will not be able to experience them all, but sample them widely! College offers many things to do and to learn, and each of them offers a different way to see the world. If I could give you only one piece of advice about selecting courses, it would be this: Challenge yourself! Don"t assume that you know in advance what fields will interest you the most. Take some courses in fields you"ve never tried before. You will not only emerge as a more broadly educated person, but you will also stand a better chance of discovering an unsuspected passion that will help to shape your future. A wonderful example of this is the fashion designer, Vera Wang, who originally studied art history. Over time, Wang paired her studies in art history with her love of fashion and turned it into a passion for design, which made her a famous designer around the world. 6 Here at the university, it may not always be pleasant to have so many new experiences all at once. In your dorm, the student next door may repeatedly play the one song, which gives you a giant headache! You may be an early bird while your roommate is a night owl! And still, you and your roommate may become best friends. Don"t worry if you become a little uncomfortable with some of your new experiences. I promise you that the happy experiences will outweigh the unpleasant ones. And I promise that virtually all of them will provide you with valuable lessons which will enrich your life. So, with a glow in your eye and a song in your heart, step forward to meet these new experiences! 7 We have confidence that your journey toward self-discovery and your progress toward finding your own passion will yield more than personal advancement. We believe that as you become members of our community of scholars, you will soon come to recognize that with the abundant opportunities for self-enrichment provided by the university, there also come responsibilities. A wise man said: "Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another." You are the inheritors of the hard work of your families and the hard work of many countless others who came before you. They built and transmitted the knowledge you will need to succeed. Now it is your turn. What knowledge will you acquire? What passions will you discover? What will you do to build a strong and prosperous future for the generations that will come after you? 8 We take great pleasure in opening the door to this great step in your journey. We take delight in the many opportunities which you will find, and in the responsibilities that you will carry as citizens of your communities, your country, and the world. Welcome!

(In spite of)

(accustomed to)

Older people are less likely to be ________ their negative emotions (情绪)

and more likely to focus on the positive.

Unit 4)A)

 reserved for B)

 caught up in √C)

 beat up to D)

在考查过程中,笔者发现B层学生普遍不认识reserved for, beat up to和counted on这三个词,对于语境的理解也欠佳。 Look, we’re about to ________ the last and final stage of our academic careers together.A)

 live on B)

 believe in C)

 embark on √ D)

For seven months out of each of her last fi ve years, she and Robby left the peace and beauty in their cozy home to _________ outreach trips into some of the most diff i cult places on earth.

Unit 3 Text A)A. share in

 B. turn down

  C. live on

 D. embark on √4. The United States owes its high level of development to many factors. The land has ample

natural resources and includes some of the best farm land in the world. People from many countries have inhabited there in the past 400 years, bringing with them a wealth of knowledge and skills, and constituting the main workforce of the nation. The workingman is found everywhere of course. From Maine to California he works numerous jobs. Besides the mere hours spent in leisure, workers and laborers

145differ in the amount of personal satisfaction they derive from their jobs. Workers who enjoy their jobs will be happier, less stressed, and generally more satisf i ed with their lives. They will also work with more diligence and precision because they have fostered a sense of personal pride in their jobs. 样题如下,词义巩固样题:(低难度)Having just come from a particular place or experienceA)

 get lost

 B)

 fresh from √

 C)

distinguish between答案:C(较高难度)Having just come from a particular place or experienceFresh from新题库2:语法再现读写教程四册书中有不少涉及重点语法和句法的句子,值得在教学和考试中重视。 (1)“Full, I’m already full!” Sau-sau muttered, ________ the scallop.第一章eyed

 B. eying

 √

 C. eyes

 D. eye(此题题干语境来自《新视野大学英语》读写第四册Unit 5 Text A,考查动词的非谓语形式之现在分词引导状语)(2)

__________ as an outstanding entrepreneur with an agreeable and winning personality, Smith is held in high regard by his competitors as well as his employees and stockholders.A. Recognize

  B. Recognized

 √

 C. Recognizing

  D. recognizes(此题题干语境来自《新视野大学英语》读写第四册Unit 3 Text A,考查动词的非谓语形式之过去分词引导状语)(3)

I leaped to my feet, my temper ________ up.A. fl ared

  B. fl ares

  C. fl aring √

 D. fl are(此题题干语境来自《新视野大学英语》读写第四册Unit 1 Text A,考查动词的非谓语形式之独立主格)新题库3:

She left a mess. Her bathroom is an

 Understanding Academic Lectures

Good morning, everybody. Now at theuniversity you, as students, are often called on to perform many types of listening tasks: listening in agroup discussion, listening to a teacher on aone-to-one basis, and listening to academic lectures. So what I"m going to talk about today is what a listener needs to be able to doin order to comprehend an academic lecture efficiently. OK. What do you need to do in order to understand the lecture? Now there are four things that I"m going to talk about. [1] Thefirst thing is that you need to be aware of all of the parts of the language that carry meaning. You all knowthat words carry meaning. So you"ve got to be aware of the vocabulary of the language,[2] but there are some other features. For one thing, you need to be aware ofstress. Let me give you an example. “I went to the bar.” “I went to the bar.” Itmakes a difference. In the second example, I"mstressing the fact that it was me and not someone else so that this meansstress has some meaning. Now the next thing you might want to listen for isintonation. For example, if I say “He came.” “He came?” There are two different meanings. One is a statement, the other one is a question. [3] And another thing youneed to listen for is rhythm. For instance, “Can you see,Mary?” VS “Can you see Mary?” Dadadadada.Dadadadada. Those two mean something different. In the first one, they are talking directly to Mary, whilethe second one means “Can you see Mary over there?” Now the next thing you must do when you listen is that you need toadd information that the lecturer expects you to add. All lecturers assume thatthey share some information with their audience [4] and that theiraudience does not need them to explain every word. And listeners have anability to add this information due to two sources of information. That is:1)

[5] theirknowledge of a particular subject; and 2)

[6] their kno wledge or experienceof the world. So remember, listening is not a matter of just absorbing the speaker"s words—the listenerhas to do more than that. The listener is not a tape recorder, absorbing the speaker"s words and putting them into his or herbrain. [7] Rather, listeninginvolves hearing the speaker"s words and reinterpretingthem, adding information if necessary. So the meaning is not in the word alone, ratherit is in the person who uses it or responds to it so that the second thing thata listener must do—add information that the lecturerassumes that they share. OK. [8] The third thing that a listener needs to do, and this is to me the most important thing of all, and that"s to predict as you listen. Nowlet me give you two reasons why you have to predict. For one thing, if you predict it helps you overcome noise. What do I mean by

noise? Maybe there"s noise outside and you can"t hear me. Maybe you"re inthe back of the room and you can"t hear all that well. Maybe the microphonedoesn"t work. Maybe there"s noise inside your head. By that I mean maybe you"rethinking of something else. And then all of a sudden, you"ll remember “Oh, I"ve got to listen.” By being ableto predict during the lecture, you can just keeplistening to the lecture and not lose the idea of what"s going on. So predictingis important to help you overcome outside noise and inside noise. And anotherreason that predicting is important is because it saves you time. Now when youlisten you need time to think about the information, relate it to old ideas, take notes, and if you"re only keeping up with what I"m saying or what thelecturer"s saying, you have no time to do that. AndI"ll bet a lot of you are having that problem right now because it"s so hardjust to follow everything I"m saying that you don"t have time to note downideas. So predicting saves you time. If you can guess what I"m going to say, you"re able to take notes, you"re able tothink, you have more time. OK? [9] And there are two types of predictions that you can make: predictions of content and predictions of organization. Let me giveyou an example in terms of content. If you hear the words “Because he loved tocook, his favorite room was...” what would you expect? Kitchen. You can guess this because you know people cook in thekitchen. OK? And you can also predict organization. Soif I was going to tell you a story, you expect me totell you why the story is important, give you a settingfor the story. So you have expectations of what the speaker is going to talkabout and how the speaker will organize his or her words. Now let"s come to the last thing a listener must do: the listenermust evaluate as he or she is listening, decide what"simportant, what"s not, decidehow something relates to something else. OK? There areagain two reasons for this. [l0] The first one is evaluating helpsyou to decide what to take notes about, what"simportant to write down, what"s not important to writedown. And the second reason is that evaluatinghelps you to keep information. Studies have shown that we retain moreinformation if ideas are connected to one another rather than just individuallyremembered. So for example, if I give you five ideasthat are not related to one another, that"s much moredifficult to remember than five ideas that are related. So you can seeevaluating helps you to remember information better because it connects ideasto one another. OK. From what I"ve said so far, you can see there"s a lot involved in listening tolectures—language awareness, adding information, making predictions and evaluations. I hope these will be useful toyou in lecture comprehension.
